A GALWAY GUEST house owner has told of how ESB came to the rescue after electrical works threatened to ruin a guest’s holiday.
Peter Downey, owner of the River Paradise guest house in Banagher, wrote a blog post on his website about an English guest who had come to Ireland all the way back in February to arrange a holiday for his family this month.
The guest was planning a surprise for his wife’s birthday, which would include a cruise up the River Shannon and a meal prepared by a private chef.
It was set to be the perfect surprise, but ESB works planned for the week before the holiday had been re-scheduled to the day of their arrival, last Thursday. The guest house would be without power for the duration of the works.
In the hopes of saving their holiday, Peter called to ask ESB to postpone the works once more:
Later that day, I received their reply: the answer was no, as all was planned and ready to go on Thursday.
After the first refusal, Peter called again, told the full story, and appealed to the company’s human side:
I asked her to request that the manager re-consider his previous decision… I said that sometimes it is necessary to look at the human side of a request and put the commercial need to one side, for another day.
On hearing Mr Downey’s problem, the manager agreed to re-schedule the work for another day, saving the family’s surprise.
It proved to me that in Ireland, we still have people and companies who value other people’s good will.
Aahhh. Doesn’t it warm the heart?
